When you shop for a gold chain, the word “solid” can mean two different things. Solid gold means the metal is real gold all the way through, not plated. Solid, hollow and semi-hollow describe how the chain is built: what is inside each link. A hollow chain can still be real 14K gold. Here is what the difference means for how a chain looks, feels, wears and costs.
What is a solid gold chain?
In a solid chain, each link is gold all the way through, with nothing hollow inside. That means more gold in every inch, so solid chains are the heaviest and the most expensive. They are dense and sturdy, and a jeweler can repair or resize them more easily. Solid construction is a popular choice for heavier, statement chains and for pieces meant to be passed down.
What is a hollow gold chain?
In a hollow chain, the links are formed from thin-walled gold tubing or shapes that are empty inside. This lets a chain look wide and full while weighing very little, and it is usually the most affordable way to get a bold look in real gold. The trade-off is that thin walls can dent or flatten if the chain is crushed or snagged, and hollow links are harder to repair.
What is a semi-hollow gold chain?
Semi-hollow sits in the middle. The links are hollow inside, but they are typically built with thicker walls or reinforcement, so they are sturdier than fully hollow links while staying lighter than solid ones. It is a common way to make a wide, comfortable chain without the weight and price of solid gold.
Solid vs hollow vs semi-hollow at a glance
| Solid | Semi-hollow | Hollow | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Inside each link | Gold all the way through | Hollow, with thicker walls | Hollow, with thin walls |
| Weight | Heaviest | Light to medium | Lightest |
| Strength | Strongest | Good | Can dent if crushed or snagged |
| Price | Highest | Middle | Lowest |
| Repair | Easiest | Possible | Harder |
Which one is right for you?
- You want a bold look at a lighter weight: semi-hollow or hollow gives you a wide chain that is comfortable to wear.
- You want the strongest, longest-lasting chain: solid is the best choice, especially for heavier styles.
- You layer several chains: lighter chains are easier to stack and more comfortable all day.
- You want a gift to be passed down: solid is worth considering.
How to know what you are buying
- Check the listing for the link type. Some sellers do not say. If you cannot find it, ask before you buy.
- Compare more than the price. Two chains of the same width can have very different weights and prices, depending on how they are built.
- Look at the weight when it is listed. A lighter chain of the same size has less gold in it.
How we list our chains
Every chain listing in our store states its link type in the product details, so you know exactly what you are buying. Most of our chains are semi-hollow, which gives a full, comfortable look at a lighter weight, and we also carry hollow and solid styles. All of our jewelry is 14K solid gold, never plated or filled. Caring for lighter chains
Lighter chains are just as real, but they do best with a little care: take them off before heavy activity or sleep, avoid pulling or snagging them, and store them flat or hanging so they do not get crushed. More tips are on our Jewelry Care page.
